Hello all,
2004 has been a western African cichlid-rich year so far. Now that the weather in the eastern US has warmed up a bit, wild caught fish from Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and the Dem. Rep. of the Congo have been imported. A partial list of what has been recently available follows:
Guinea/Sierra Leone/Liberia
Anomalochromis thomasi "Guinea"
Hemichromis cristatus "Lime"*
H. sp. "Guinea I"
H. sp. "Guinea II"
Pelvicachromis humilis ("Liberia Red" & "Kasewe" color forms)
P. rubrolabiatus (http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/pel...tus/pelvicachromis_rubrolabiatus_lamboj_2004/)
P. signatus (http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/pel...signatus/pelvicachromis_signatus_lamboj_2004/)
*The "Lime" in Hemichromis cristatus "Lime" was coined by Laif DeMason in reference to this form's greenish coloration. Although the distribution of H. cristatus extends into Guinea, I have seen this fish and it is not H. cristatus. As more is known about this form, I will post it here in the forum.
Ghana
Steatocranus irvinei
Tilapia spp. (contaminants)
Nigeria
Pelvicachromis sacrimontis
Cameroon
Benitochromis spp.
Benitochromis sp. "Eseka" (probably B. sp. "Makondo")
Chromidotilapia spp.
Etia nguti (http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/etia/etia_nguti/etia_nguti_schliewen-stiassny_2003/)
Gobiocichla ethelwynnae
Parananochromis caudifasciatus (http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/par...arananochromis_caudifasciatus_boulenger_1913/)
Pelvicachromis taeniatus (several color forms)
Tilapia spp. (contaminants)
DR Congo
Nanochromis transvestitus
Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus
Steatocranus casuarius
S. tinanti
Teleogramma brichardi
Tilapia sp. (Probably T. tholloni)
With peaked interested in western Afican cichlids--and other western Afican fishes--among US hobbyists, we may look forward to continued importations of an incredibly diverse wealth of species.
Enjoy!
All the best,
