I have set up a 24"x14"x16" tank for T. candidi and intend to have there 1+2 harem but as the bottom is arranged into three parts separated by solid roots, I have started to consider even a team of 1+3. Would that be too many? Smack me if it would... ;-)

No need to answer, in our LFS my son fell in love with A. rositae and now we have a 1+2 swimming, or rather hiding, in the tank.

I think you are more likely to succeed in breeding the Taeniacara candidi if you just give a trio the tank to themselves.
Guess it comes down to your priorities.
