An updated set of pictures a year later:

The blue on them really pop. For those who care the ec is ~21 and the ph is ~4.9

When i first setup the aquarium it looked this so you can see how well plants grow over a year:

Updated pictures - i had a bit of a set back on plants - i think because the spread of the 'grass' caused a lack of nutrient + light was a bit low. About 3

months ago i added a bunch of root tabs and increase light intensity from 30 to 40 % and while you would have to look carefully there is an abundant of new growth that is healthy. Today i upped the light to 50% - i'm using the s. repens (not pictured) to help gauge light intensity.

They look a little skinny in the pictures though they seem less skinny in person so i don't really know if they are proper weight or under weight; the colour intensity on the discus is quite good with strong blue and deep orange on the bottom.

Very nice discus. I gave up on my sand bottomed tank and went for bare bottom with better luck.
But, what about the quality of life for the fish?
I hate to see aquarium fish in a tank with nothing in it, apart from in a shipment place where it is understandable.

I think it is hard to answer that question without a lot of long term (10+ years?) experiments. The argument for bare bottom is that it is easier to keep the aquarium clean - the argument against is that the environment is more foreign (i guess). As to the fish preference who knows - mine never actually express an opinion and I'm not eager enough to do any sort of long term control experiments esp with this species.
