Borelli pair in 7G

Hello,

I have a small, cheap 7 Gallon tank (40cm long, 25cm wide and 26.5cm high) and a growing facination with apistos. If I stuck a big peice of driftwood in the middle, java moss and a couple of flowerpot caves in the tank would I be able to keep a pair of Apisto. Borelli which are currently availible to me or would this tank be too small for them?

It should be fine, but when they breed, you will need another tank in about a month - to grow out the babies. I guess you could use plastic boxes for this, if you do not have another aquarium.

Is there another apistogramma species I could keep in such a small tank size of 7g?

The main problem with small tanks & dwarf cichlids is the territoriality of the fish. You can certainly keep almost any pair in such a tank (see blueblue tanks), but it requires experience to avoid losses. I suggested A. borellii because they are small, tend to form pairs in which the male often is accepted as a partner in raising the brood, and adaptable to temperature variations more common in smaller tanks. If you are willing to accept the occasional loss, you can try most apistos.
