New to apistos

Hi everyone, I've been keeping fish for 5 years or so now but never really got into apistos, I had a pair of Borelli last year but gave up pretty quickly as the tank I had wasn't suitable at all, I've now set up a tank with lots of leaf litter, branches and plants fully cycled and ready to go, my question is this, does anyone have any suggestions for an apistos for beginners?The more colourful the better! They will be the only occupants except 9 phoenix rasbora. The tank footprint is 60cm x 40cm so 24" x 15.7 . Thanks.

Try A. borellii again. The overbred incestuous domestic breeds have a high potential to frustrate beginners.

Will do! Is it better to have a pair of Borelllii or a trio or is the tank big enough for 2 lone males?

2 lone males will likely work; only get a female if you want to breed them (which usually doesn't work well in a community aquarium); if you do get a female then only 1m/1f.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated, do the males need to be of the same species? Or could I have 2 males of different species if the parameters were similar?

It can work if the fish are visually different in body and fin shape and have the same general size and temperament. It also really depends on how structured your tank actually is.
