hi guys i have been on this forum for a little while ,im more of a lurker reading all the posts that pertain to my fish care.anyway i recently acquired 2 pairs of A.Baenschi(not common in south africa i have 2 of 10 pairs that came in the country i think) and 4 weeks later one pair has done the deed and emerged with fry.the female is very fierce but i have still left the male in the tank ,with my tefe agassizi i usually remove the male as the female resorts to domestic violence ,so far this male seems to just lurk on on one side of the back of the tank.should i remove him for safety sake?

i appreciate the assistance and advice.

kind regards
Murray

Yes if the male is acting like he's being terrorized, he probably is. I would get him out or insert a divider, especially if they are hard to get in your country. I think of baenschi as the "Convict Apisto" due to the pattern and ferocity of brooding females.

OK here is a 'chime'. It depends on how the fish are packed. One fish in a breather bag at a stable temperature can survive over a week in transit. Heavily packed fish may not survive at all.

I shipped some harder to find West African dwarf cichlids (Apisto like in size) to Hawaii. The box went off the grid while in transit. 6 days later it finally showed up in Hawaii were it was supposed to have gotten in 2 days. Not a single DOA! The fish were packed 1 per bag in regular bags in a small styro with a heat pack. It was early fall if I remember right but obviously the temps in the box didn't dip down very low.

I've had fish arrive after 18-20 hours of transit from Wisconsin to California with 100% DOA because the box sat out somewhere cold for to long. The heat pack was still kicking (2 days later even!) but the fish were all dead and their water WAY to cold.

Like Mike said, there are many factors that come into play when shipping fish. Most of these are out of anyone's control and you have to hope for the best. It's the biggest reason I see to find a reputable shipper who will stand behind DOA's under normal circumstances and make things right.
