Apisto Abacaxi sexing

Alright everybody, hello again. Let’s play the age old game of sex that apisto. These are 2 Apistogramma Abacaxi Wilhelmi I picked up a few weeks ago from aquashella. Was sold as a male female pair but I have my doubts, but then I look at the second one and think maybe….

Behavior wise they are very calm with each other. They acknowledge the presence but are not aggressive. The less colorful one doesn’t retaliate, rather rolls onto its side while the male postures. Just curious about what you guys think.

Last picture is the entire setup, 40g breeder. Critique is always appreciated

The second fish could be female. Have you seen any interaction between them?

Yes, the second fish doesn’t challenge the guaranteed male, rather rolls onto its side when being confronted

Belly rolling is an apisto behavior that means it is submissive to the displaying fish. Both submissive males and females use this behavior. Now if the male was laying on its side while displaying this is courting behavior in males. I would just wait and see what develops. I seriously doubt that breeding will be successful in your community tank anyway - especially with fry predators like the Rummy-nose tetras in it.

There has been no mention of hopes for successful breeding so far. Perhaps the op has another tank available?

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
