water from laundry dryer

Hi, I was wondering if I could use the water from the water reservoir in my laundry dryer for water-exchanges. It sure is a less expensive way of lowering Ph and GH than buying a box of peat each month :D . It's got a GH value of 0 and a PH value of 7. I gues I'll have to mix it with tap water before using it ( PH 8, GH 12 ).

Thanks in advance, Robert

I buy a bale of peat for $6.99 and it lasts for several months. I didn't know a laundry dryer used water. It sounds backwards to me.

well, water in the clothes evaporates, condenses and runs down a pipe into a water reservoir. Simple as that. Anyway, this condensed water has a GH of 0 and a PH of 7.

Oh, And in Holland peat isn't as cheap as in america :(

:? Roppie... is the pipe or reservior aluminum, like the condesation coils in most dehumidifiers? If so, I would not use it.... Have you tested electric conductivity?

Hi roppie
The water also has softener that they use in the clothes and also it might have some amount of detergent that you would use. so its not a good idea.

Don't Throw the Fish Away with the Laundry Water

Dear Robert,

Me thinks Kribs has a good point here. Your laundry dryer water very well may contain residual detergents that would prove highly toxic to your fish. Peat conditioning is far better and safer way to soften your water. You can get yourself a huge bag from the Home Depot or a local garden center, quite inexpensively, that should last you months on end.

Good luck!

allright, thnx for your answers, I won't use the water by the way. Never thought of buying peat at a gardening center, I use to buy this enormously expensive stuff from petshops.

roppie, look for 'canadian sphagnum peat moss'. a bale (3 kg?) costs me about 5 dollars (3 us dollars). but i am in canada. a bale will last you a LONG time, depending on how much you are using. pet store peat moss is not worth the money at all.

read the ingredients on the bales. it must be UNTREATED pure canadian sphagnum peat moss. absolutely no fertilisers or additives. my bale, purchased at home depot, says, 'Lerner (brand) pure canadian sphagnum peat moss'.

I buy Scott brand. but really as long as the ingridents are cool, it should be no problem.
No treatment needed. just put it in a filter bad/stocking/or other porous bag and stick it into the filter. It should be on the other side of the mechanical filter-closest to the exit. Some people also lay a layer of this stuff in a new tank before the substrate is added.
