Females always got black first rays of ventral fins while males have these fins transparent. It seems to work most of the time even before fish get adult coloration. I was trying to apply this rule on my cara-pintadas. I am a bit confused. I got two sexes for sure but it seems unlikely that biggest one is female.

Yes,
I use to think that the black pelvics were a dead give away for females too but, not so. Well, at least Mike Wise who is a pretty knowledgable guy said it isn't always the case.
I usually get my magnifying glass out and check to see if dorsal is pointed or rounded the pointed is usually male same I believe goes for the anal.
Now if your lucky they will go into spawning mode at a young age and a glowing yellow is a for sure female as you probably already know. Not much help but, I don't count on the black pelvics anymore.

mordor,
Jerry is right. The black leading edge to the ventral is effective mainly with complimentary information to judge gender. I have seen way too many species that have that black mark in both sexes, especially whe not completely mature. Plus, it is not unusual for sub-dominant males to display numerous female characteristics to avoid punishment.
It definitely should not be overlooked, but it also should not be the only factor you look at! 8O
