Hi
I just picked up a wild pair of Pelvicachromis taeniatus "Moliwe"

What are the water condition to get them to spawn and what is the sex ratio of the fry`s ,with them as well

Thanks

George

George,

I keep two pairs of Moliwe in hard "Midwest" water, pH slightly acidic to neutral. I change 25-35% of the water on a weekly basis. My Moliwe have spawned several times; sex ratio (without me keeping track too well) was always about 50/50, perhaps a few more females. Whenever I want them to spawn, I transfer one of the pairs into a 29G tank, together with a few Congo tetras or Yellow Congos.

Good luck!

Janos... how do you get the typical 'widwest' fard water to go to an acidic pH? The typical midwest hard water around here has a KH of more than 8, which would prevent the pH from ever getting much below 7.4.

Ted, so far I've tested the following: blending tap water with rain water, peat, and CO2 injection. All with moderate success and, hence, abandoned. As a follow up on a previous discussion you, George, and I had a few days ago, I will now move on to using RO water/tap water mix plus Seachem Acid Buffer. At least, I'll try this for a few select tanks. (Still trying to get my transvestitus and parilus to spawn.)

Going back to George's original question: the Moliwe didn't seem to mind my water too much, they often spawned in plain tap water. Maybe shear dumb luck?!

NO.. moliwe are pretty tolerant, whereas other taeniatus are not. Wouri is a b****h unless the water is perfect. I alway suggest moliwe as a 'first' taeniatus because they are rather bulletproof.

Mine constantly spawn at a ph of 6.8 gh of 3 and a kh of 2.
I hope you have alot of tank space for the fry because these guys are worse than rabbits!
