Does anyone know the relationship between pH and sex ratio of the offspring for this species? I have a pair that look like they are just about to spawn any day now. My tank is at pH 7.2 right now and maybe 50 ppm. Thoughts? Thanks-
My spawnings of P.Subocellatus 'Matadi' were always in water with a ph around 6.5..from around 7-8 spawnings from three seperate pairs i always had nearly 50-50 split..Temp was always around an average of 78f(in my space heated fishroom so it does change slightly day to day).
However with P.Taeniatus 'Nigerian red' in the same water, temp and conditions i had two spawnings which were 95% male...Trying to get rid of 150 male fish is no fun at all
My wild breeding pair of Pelvicachromis Taeniatus 'Bipindi' spawn monthly in the above water and i always get a rough 50-50 split...so far its only the captive bred Nigerian strain that i have had trouble with skewed sex ratios...
The jury has not even been selected that will determine the whole environmentally induced sex determination issues with Pelvicachromis. I have had slanted ratios with P. subocellatus Moanda in totally different water values. I have had the same pair in the same water parameters throw a batch that was 80% male one time and 80% female the next. About all I can say is keep the water slightly acidic (pH 6.7-6.9), soft and cool (72-74F)... and hope for the best. I can say that my female predominant spawn occurred in the summer when water temps in my fish room are 8)F or higher. pH is always about 6.8 - 7.2, TDS about 50 ppm and KH 1-2.
