previously, my mendezi was not in a good body shape: odd lateral bands. I sent them back to the shop keeper. Shop keeper claims he is very good in keeping apisto. After 1 month, I get them back home. The male in the bag looks a lot better in terms of color, body shape(very slim). BTW, none of my fish are kept in sandy tanks.

It's always hard to ID a fish from just one photo. Still I question the A. viejita (or A. macmasteri) ID. The caudal spot is too large for either viejita or macmasteri and the dorsal spines don't look as serrated as on macmasteri-complex species. Of course, I could be wrong. I've been wrong before and will undoubtedly be wrong again sometime in the future.:)

i recommend everyone to use ADA amazon soil as the base, and you will see the result. dont judge without a try, it will be different. and the water quality also affects the color in fish.

I take it you work for the company or sell the stuff?

Might be time to move your posts to the sales section! :)

Let's just all enjoy our fish and not worry about what the other guy thinks is best. If it works and you like your own tanks and fish does it really matter if someone else doesn't? Not to me!

i am just a hobbiest like any of you. I am a data processor working for Capgemini Group and i wont get into aquarium selling industry. This is a place for us to share the experience of keeping apistos. I am just sharing what i have heard from other senior hobbiests. ADA is just one of many brands that Asian aquarium hobbiest fancy about...Maybe western people dont like Japanese product..sorry for giving unattractive advice here.

Beautifull fish. I've only had apistos for a couple of weeks but after seeing your fish I want to get more. I'm between mendezi and macmersti for my next apisto tank

ADA soil has been the default choice for many people here too. But all of their soil products (Amazonia, Africana, Malaya) have certain problems for us dwarf cichlid keepers. Of the 3 ADA soils, Amazonia is actually the least suitable for our style of fishkeeping, in my opinion. And there are some other substrates, both Japanese and non-Japanese brands, which I think work much better if you'd prefer such product.

hi. i am not using ADA soil myself. like i said, i am sharing what other seniors' opinion. however, i am using another Jap's product, Fiveplan. I think it is better than ADA because it has carbon in it, which helps make the water clear. have you heard of the brand?
