what I'm wondering is, how strict is the idea of mixing or not-mixing dwarves from different areas, I can't afford another tank, but one of my current ones has sprung a leak. How comfortably would a pair of pelvicachromis pulcher live if a pair of microgeophagus ramirezi was introduced into their very heavily planted 36"x12"x16" with many caves, a dozen hyphessobrycon serpae, 3 crossocheilus siamensis, 1 carinotetraodon travancoricus, 2 brachygobius xanthozona, 1 pantodon buchholzi, and one 6" apteronotus albifrons, as well as a constant flow of several dozen ghost shrimp. I have been told by some people (well, quite a few actually) that this isn't a suggested mix to start with, but this tank is almost a year established now, and is quite harmonious. would adding the pair of rams rock the boat too much ? Also, the tank with the rams has a trio of large guppies that I would like to add, but would not be terribly upset about tossing in the goldfish pond.

Adding the guppies would make no difference. They are not bottom dwellers. If plenty of hiding places the rams may do ok. Rams are not as agressive, but if in a pair the will stick together. If not can you get a divider till you get the other tank fixed (if you plan to)

As far as "locales" go they are totally different. And by totally different I mean different continents however the water they require is similar. The Pulchers are from West Africa and Rams Sth America but combining them shouldn't create any probs at all.

UNLESS your pulchers start to breed, but then every fish in the tank has a problem. Well two big problems and lots of little problems!
