Keeping a journal

I started keeping journals on my fish/tanks/fishroom for the last two years. Simply said it's a mess. I keep track of water parameters, feeding schedules, breeding records, deaths, things I do like move fry, fish to diff tanks.. Maybe it's too much.

I am curious to hear ( or read) what others do. What you keep track of and what kind of lay out.

I keep mine by date. On each date I record what needs to be recorded for that date...water parameters, breeding/raising/designing projects, ...etc.

After a few months its crazy trying to find stuff. I thought about keeping seperate journals, but that gets complicated.

Just wondering.

Thanks

I tried that, but the task got too large. I will journal for a particularly difficult species, one that I hope to write an article about or a project that I am conducting an experiment with. If I wanted to keep it up I think that I would just run it like a diary and write about things that happened that day that were particularly interesting... that is what is worth remembering in the long run. I do keep a spawn log on a white board in the fishroom that records species and date of spawning. That is just for club BAP purposes though.

I write my spawning log on the breeding tank. As the fish are moved, so is the information. Like Ted, if it is a rare/unusual/difficult fish, I will enter all of the data as a 'hard copy'.

If you were really devoted and took an afternoon to commit your data to an excel spreadsheet it would be a little easier to mine certain data. Then you could also cross-reference species and unique experiences...

I've been considering doing this, but at the level I'm at I monitor big things like pH, and phosphates. I know my water here (aerated tap) is about 2d GH and KH. That and I only have 4 tanks so it's pretty easy to stay on top of!
