Wooohooo

Mom and dad are the proud parents of 50 or so baby inca's. I didn't even know they were on eggs, heck they're still in QT. I just got them from Neil On the 7th or 8th of this month. Now the hard part, the first 2 weeks for the fry.

Exellent fish Neil, thanks

Congratulations Matt!
The perms were virtually identical in my spawning, but I didn't get quite that large of a spawn. Hope they do well from here on in. This is one spectacular species. I just love the female in spawning dress.

I just wish I could see her more, I have 4 busted pots and the floor covered with leaves and java moss, so I don't get to see her much, but the fry are coming out.

What roll has the male taken in your tanks after hatch? Do you still have him in the tank?

You bet. I don't pull the male very often, even if he is only window dressing. If the family can work as a natural unit, that make it better for viewing and, possibly, better for biology. Who knows how valuable it is for the fry to be raised by both parents, even in an environment without predation. From a pair-bonding perspective, I think that them remaining together is valuable also. When I pull the fry later, they are not as likely to have too much trouble spawning again.
The other thing is that I don't like to disturb things when I don't have to. Pulling a fish and putting him into a new situation and then putting him back later leave more chances for stress, disease, and tank space problems.
They are not fighting now and he is somewhat joining in without causing problems. That is good enough for me.

Pair-Bonding Family Units

Dear Neil,

I couldn't agree with you more. Unless absolutely necessary, from my experience it is best to leave the family unit in tack for as long as is appropriate. I seldom remove a male and leave both parents and fry together for as long as possible. This method has proved quite rewarding with both the parents and the fry.

Glad to hear that you do as well.

Thanks!

I finally caught the little buggers in a position where I could get a reasonable count on them, looks like 60+. This morning when I turned the lights on they were all laying flat on the bottom in the front corner. I was able to get 30 counted before they started schooling up and they were at least 30+ more. So far I have lost 3 or 4 that I have seen. Still looking good at 9 days, it should get easier from here on.

Gotta go to town today, my peat barrel is empty and I am out of peat, I really don't want to miss a water change with these guys.

That is a large spawn. I am glad that you are having such quick and positive success with these guys. You are obviously doing many things right!

again

Mom is hiding in a pot again, so I pulled the babies.

Neil, did you see the eggs on your spawn? Were they glued to a pot or on the substrate?

Matt,
Yes, they were attached to the roof of a cave. My fry are still with the pair. however, the female is rather intolerant of the male. Might be helpful to use dithers in the future.

I got home today from a weekend in the mountains. The Inca's must have enjoyed their privacy too. They were displaying a brand new brood of fry when I looked into their tank. 2nd batch in 30 or so days.

It's another nice sized brood, I'd say more like 80+ this time.

I am going to have to put these two in the display tank for awhile until I get rid of some fish.

Neil, I just can't thank you enough for getting me such great fish.

They are all grown up now, some are even breeding. I have around 150 to find homes for.

Email or pm me if you are interested.
