Hi all , just joined after browsing the forum for a while, looks like a great community. I'm looking into keeping Apistos in a 180L (100x40x50cm) I managed to get hold of.

What would be my options for a tank this size? It seems larger than recommended for a single species breeding tank.

I was originally planning a community with Tetras and Cories, but am concerned about reports of missing eyes from breeding Apistos defending their territories from the Cory. While browsing I saw the repeated advice that a community tank is not a breeding tank. I wouldn't be planning to successfully raise the fry, however would it be better to not mix males and females in such a tank?

Thank in advance.

Welcome. If you're not interested in breeding then why add more plain-colored females? I like a well-decorated community tank with a mix of small species in each level of the tank. For apistos I like to mix together males with different shapes/fins. You get some interspecies display without the extreme intraspecific aggression seen between 2 fish of the same species & sex interested in setting up a breeding territory. I call mine a 'geriatric tank' because that's where I put all my over-the-hill males that I no longer use for breeding.

I didn't really consider keeping males together, I thought they would be too aggressive toward one another. That helps a lot thank you, is there a general rule for the amount of tankspace each male would require and is there any particular species to avoid?
