I am about to set up 2 partitioned tanks which will allow me to vary the size of tank for raising fry. I was going to go with a bare tank. My question is this should I have corys small plecs to help keep tank in order.

I know several people who use red ramhorn snails in their fry tanks for clean up with great success. Personally for fry I leave them in the tank by themselves but for 1/4"-3/8" juvinals or larger a small pleco or two would be great.

Are the Red Ramshorn snails used in Apisto tanks? I read that they need calcium for their shells. Is that not a problem for soft acidic water

I normally don't raise my Apistos in soft water once I pull them out of the breeding tank. But if it starts to be a problem just rotate your snails in and out of hard and soft water tanks.

Hi all,

They work really well, but they don't survive in water below about 100microS and pH7 for long. You can see the shell erosion and once they are about 50% white they need to come out of the tank. MTS are a bit more tolerant.

I'd definitely go with a substrate, bare tanks and Apisto's don't get on. Just a thin layer of sand is fine. I'd also add some cover. Lots of moss is really good, but you can use coconut shell, pot shards, Oak leaves etc. If there is no cover bullying will occur and all the fish will be stressed, leading to fish death.

If you use plants? fairly shallow water and a floater with good roots like Ceratopteris or Pistia is perfect.

cheers Darrel
