basically, using a Korallia, on the basis of its turnover.

however unlike a conventional pump its not easy to design a built in filter. what I was thinking is that utilising top and bottom intakes.

any thoughts??

powerheads as pumps

Hi all,
PsYcHoTiC_MaDmAn,
I think it is a good idea, but would be difficult with a Koralia.

I use a Maxijet 400/600 powerhead and a ppi10 12"x4"x4" "Koi carp" sponge for all my filters. The Maxijet comes with a scaffold and you can fix the sponge straight on, or use a bit of perforated tubing. I just cut the sponge to fit the tank size. The triple sucker arrangement on Maxijets is quite good, and you can fit a venturi tube on if you want as well.

The sponge with a 10mm hole is the right size, although you can fix a 25mm hole one on with a cable tie. I've also used the coarse dimpled sponge sheets, again from pond filters, rolled into a "sausage" and cable-tied on.

TA aquaculture sell the right sort of sponges in the UK, and they come recommended as a seller.

or you can buy them from any "Koi" place. The Koi filter sponges I've been buying are "Kockney Koi", but there are plenty for sale on Ebay cheaper.

I'm going to Germany in the summer and I'm hoping to buy some Poret sponge and scaffold to try as a Hamburg mattenfilter, and I've also bought a small Rena IV3 internal (from Steve) and I'm hoping to do some tests, on water quality and ease of use, on identical 60 litre tanks using an internal filter, mattenfilter (powered by a powerhead) and powerhead/sponge combination.

Not a recommendation for supplier, but just the first links from Google:

I know the korallia is a difficult one to do it with.

I was thinking of trying to get it like the Juwel filters (apart from their miserable turnover) the fact is, theoretically this should be more efficient (consider the advantages of a screw propeller over paddle-wheel) problem comes in ensuring it pumps through,

maybe I ought to just fabricate one up and see how it works.

basically I got a 4foot tank thats 2 low to for an external on, and I dont think internals are quite up to the job, and the eurobraces mean I cant use a large HOB filter (I was looking at the Ehiem liberty filters, but their just not going to work with the braces.)

the other thing is that I'm looking to see how I'll filter my fishroom (which will be having 6 72by30by18high tanks in as a minimum, and theres not going to be room for externals for them, so need some other way of filtering it. and running all of them on Ehim or ocean runner pumps the wattage will build up quickly.

whereas I could get 4600lph for 11w with the Koralia4, so if I could get that filter wise itd make some savings in energy consumption

Hi all,
You can get high volume pumps for hydroponics etc. They will pump a large volume of water to quite a high head height, and some of them are very low wattage. Have you got room for a sump?

I like the fish/frog basement at <http://brianstropicals.com/basement.html>, but I appreciate it is way beyond my budget, but I'm sure plenty of members of this forum must be able to offer some sage advice on the in's and out's of multiple tank filtration.

cheers Darrel

I've thought about a similar design to this using a Koralia too. They are a very efficient design and produce nicely diffused flow. I think you'd need to be very careful to make sure the media has very little restriction on the water's flow or there could be flow of water back through the koralia into the filter. It'd have to be a very open media.
