Going to be picking up a pair of cacatuoides soon, out of the apistos I’ve kept I’ve never actually kept these
I know the difference between double and triple reds, but can anyone show me some photos of the colour forms they keep?

There's one thing to consider: There are no donestic strain-standards, so every breeder can call their strain whatever they want. That's why many colour breeds are sold under a number of different names, even though they all look the same. Just as a heads up if (rather when) confusion arises what you actually have in front of you.

Oh no I’m fully aware that sellers will name whatever they want, but just wanted to have an idea of what strains im looking at, more than likely I’ll just stick with a wild colour

Ah, I see.

Wild type is hard to come by in many countries, but definitely better than any domestic breeds.

There are ~15 recognized species/form/populations of A. (cf.) cacatuoides - and I'm sure more will be found. Add to that we don't know where the holotype A. cacatuoides is from. It certainly isn't from "Dutch Guiana" (Surinam) as quoted in the original description.

I can get a few different locals and forms which is why I wanted to see
I only really have one shot at importing so I want to see what I’d get

Mine were pretty calm with other fishes, no where near as aggressive as the male agassizii that came with them. I had a few but they all turned out to be males. The first picture is the one that immediately became dominant, the one in the second picture only started to look like a male after I removed the dominant one to a different tank, quite a long time after I got them.

It seems like I was lucky with my wild cacatuoides. The agassizii male though was a real terror, even attacking cichlids bigger than him, and allowing no other Apistogramma to coexist with him in a 240l well structured tank, he wouldn't just chase them away, he would hunt them down.

So I ended up going for a double red pair, both are still quite small but very excited to see what they do in the future

Have you read experiences here with apistos that breed in a community aquarium?
I have, I’ve also bred macmasteri and agassizii in both community and solo tanks
I’ve got spare tanks to move fish out and separate male and female if/when needed
I’m not actively trying to breed, I’m more interested in just the spawning behaviours in general

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
