Evening all,
I’m in the process of planning a few Apistogramma tanks, and I’ve seen several sources recommend fine-grain sand as a substrate because of their natural sifting behaviour.
I’ve never kept Apistogramma before, but I’m hoping to start with Apistogramma borellii later this year.
Ideally, I’d like to use a dark substrate rather than light sand.
A friend of mine suggested LiveMoor Natural kiln-dried black sand, which has a grain size of 0.1–0.7mm. However, he’s only used it in tanks with Corydoras, tetras, and rasboras, as he doesn’t keep Apistogramma himself. I was wondering if anyone here has experience using this sand specifically in Apistogramma tanks?
Other options I’ve been considering are Dehner Aqua Aquarium Sand, which is more than twice the price and has a grain size of 0.4–1.2mm, and Amtra Shiny Sand, which sits in between on price with a grain size of 0.3–0.9mm.
I’m also open to other recommendations for dark substrates that people have successfully used with Apistogramma.
