Apistogramma Borellii - Male or Female?

Hi,

I recently bought an Apistogramma Borellii. When I got it I thought it was probably a female due to it being more yellow in colour. I understand males often display more blue. However, I'm now wondering if I've actually got a male, particularly because his fins are quite extended. I've uploaded a couple of videos to Youtube and wondered if any of you could give me your opinion.

Many thanks.

That's a very attractive male you have there.

As you've suggested, the finnage is nicely extended and the blue on the body confirming a male fish.

The quality of the video is impressive, can you tell me what camera type you are using and what software you use for proccesing the film please.

Thanks

Andrew

Thanks Andrew.

The videos were actually shot using the video function on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 digital camera. I then used Windows Movie Maker to put the clips together etc. So nothing fancy really. The camera records in .mov format which Windows Movie Maker doesn't open so I converted them using "RAD Video Tools".

Here's another video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2txtbtG_Qfc

And some photos taken with the same camera:

Hi all,
I'd agree with Andrew, it's a very smart male borellii and looks in top condition.
Have you got a female for him? I like your Chocolate Gourami as well, not an everyday fish at all. Have you had it long?
cheers Darrel

Thanks Darrel.

I haven't got a Borellii female yet but a local store has some Borellii in stock. They're still quite small though so I'm going to wait a month or so, by which time it'll hopefully be a bit easier to pick out a female.

I have 2 Chocolate Gouramis. I think they're both male because they have the odd tussle for dominance - nothing nasty though. I suppose I've had them for a month or so. They're quite interesting fish. They move around rather gracefully at their own pace. The brown colour is a lovely rich brown and the bands are a nice shiny gold. Here's a photo of one of them:
