I just picked a pair up yesterday. When I say a pair I mean 2 though. They are small(no kidding , huh) and it is hard to tell if they are juvinille malesor females. They seem to be doing great though. The only differences being is, One of them is a little larger. He/she also displays a red tinge to its body. She swims and basically owns a piece of driftwood in the tank. It immediatley charges the other if it thinks the other is getting to close. It even goes after the Panda cories if they get to close.

So what do you guys think? Males? females? Too young?

ANy tips or special care for them?

BTW, I got these at the Shark Aquarium. Thanks, Randall for the tip. It's a great place with a good selection of Apistos. If your into Pike Cichlids and Pirahnna you would be in heaven there.

My Inca females have black ventrals and very pronounced vertical bars, the first two spines on the dorsal are black too. The males ventrals are three times the length with yellow. The body on the males is much larger and no vertical bars, and of course the dorsal has very extended spines.

The light is off right now, I'll take another look this evening.

I have a couple hundred 4 month old sub-adult Inca50 right now that I am trying to sex, it is fairly difficult for me to pick out the females, the dominant males are real easy of course. At four months some of the males have extended dorsals already.

You must have some very young fish, I'd think the one doing the charging must be a female, maybe both of them are, if they are fighting for territory.

Does the larger one have any extended dorsal spines?

I know someone would come to the rescue. Oddly enough I was thinking they worth both females. I had the same goings on with my viejita females. They both have the dark vertical bars you are talking about.
I guess I should be on the hunt for a male here then. I've seen a few pics of the male with the high dorsal fin spines. Very nice.

Perhaps I should get with you when you are willing to part with male?

Thanks for the help.
