Hi all,
My suspicion would be that the final factor is the most important one. Try them on something richer in carotenoids, live Cyclops are perfect, but there are dried foods like "Cyclopeeze" that add colour. Would be my guess as well. I like some floating plants and dead leaves/Alder cones to reduce light levels and tint the water.
