Surprise fry Apisto Hongsloi in community tank

Hi all, I am new here… got a Honglsloi pair several months ago and thought the male might be a dud, no eggs hatched from several spawns in their own tank. I decided to just put them in a scaped heavily planted 20 and do a small community tank instead. Two days after adding some Gertrudae rainbow fish I see the female has a batch of free swimmers. I hatch bbs anyways and I have a tank I can use for grow out but should I remove the rainbows? They are small with small mouths but to my surprise they really go all over the tank and get in the Apisto’s space. Only other fish in there is a small bristlenose. Male Apisto is not causing issues for the moment. Thanks!

I'd remove the rainbow they will drive the female mad. Of course it depends a bit on the size of the aquarium. Not sure about that species but the species i had stayed within an inch of the top so if the aquarium is tall they would avoid the female. Of course if that species hangs low as some do yea they are going to be a problem.

The Pseudomugil are fry predators, and Ancistrus are known to go for eggs and wigglers if they can. Male A. hongsloi usually do not care for the fry, sometimes eat them themselves. Mine got beat up every spawn by the female, then would give her a beating each time she wasn't receptive to his advances.

I'd not try raising any fry in that constellation, not even target feed the fry, just let nature go its course.

Thank you for the advice. I’ve moved the rainbows out to another community tank and that has calmed things a lot. I may move the others too. This pair has been surprisingly peaceful but good to know that is not a norm for Hongsloi. It would be nice to grow a few fry out if I can, she still has a good size group.

I've always kept 1 small nannostomus, hemmigrammus or hyphessobrycon with mother and the fry....it happened too often that mother, I think off bordem, ate her own fry. It happened a lot less wenn another fish was present. Thats my experience.

Thanks for the insight! I have since moved the male out as he was being a nuisance. I don’t have any good dither fish to add really… I have Ember tetras but they are full size. I think they’d eat fry.

Update: these guys are about 12-13 days old. I think I have 20-30, they are doing well on 3x daily baby brine shrimp. When do you add other foods?

While bbs is great if you want to switch to dry food you can - btw after about 3 days they will start eating decapsulated bbs eggs (amazon has them); i use them when the bbs is slow to hatch.

Good to know thank you! I tried some frozen daphnia which they are taking. I have other fry right now so no shortage of baby brine, I’ll keep that up maybe 2x day + alternate food for 3rd feeding.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
