My A. panduro pair has finally produced a decent size brood. This is the thrid spawn I am aware of since getting the fish in November. The pair are tank raised and young. Each of the previous spawns resulted in only a few fry that did not last long. I was using extremely soft water (50 mS, 0 KH and pH 6.0). I decided to increase the hardness a bit and use the increased buffer to balance the use of Acid Buffer to drop the pH. The conditions for this spawn are 200 mS, KH 2 and pH 5.5. To got to that point I started with water that was 130 mS, KH 3 and pH 6.8, and used Acid Buffer to drop the pH. The addition of the chemical caused the mS to go up and the KH to go down slightly. The pH is very stable, however, whereas it fluxuated too much when the KH was 0.
Who knows if the chemcal adjustments actually made a difference, or if the pair just matured enough to make it work. Looks like there are about 30 fry.
