Just as an little update... my female had a defect with both her pectoral fins and died. (along with a number of OTHER A. borellii we ordered from this particular shop)

My male was still quite happy and healthy. I cam across a LFS selling borellii for $14 a fish 8O and decided to get a new female.

just a single pair in a 10gal tank with only a few Killie fry I couldn't capture.

Spawned in about 2-3 weeks. I have approx 30+ fry now.

The only fish in there are still the male and female.

Going to try to grow out some BBS to feed this coming week. Although I'm not sure how fast the fry will grow. I figure they hatched friday night.

Thanks for the all the initial support in helping me with my Apisto's!

hatched out some BBS to feed. Have approx 15 or so fry that are growing nicely.

Any suggestions as to what I should do with the tank inhabitants?

The tank is a 10gal. Heavy planted (primarly java moss and algae), and has a large piece of malaysian driftwood (many hiding locations)

Both the parents are still in there.

The male is not bothering the female/fry at all... I think he got close a few times and has learned that he will get nipped if he gets to close.

I've read that many times people will remove the male after the spawning, and then the female eventually. Is this necessary? Or will they form a bit of a hierarchy like N. Bricardi will?

I do wish to grow out a number of the fry if possible, but my space is at a premium.

Thanks for any input!

how long can you expect to keep almost 20 fish in a 10 gal? sooner or later the fry will be getting too big. if they stay in there, they will become fry predators when the parents want to spawn again and the parents will see them as a threat. you will need other quarters for them.

ah... very good point. So unlike some other cichlids that will happily form a community/hierarchy. The parents will not like their first spawn which is growing out to be in the area at all!!

I could definetly move them in to a more community type tank 29gal (with small/peaceful species) to grow-out.

The only question is at what size do I do this?? or is this more of a not at what size but as the mature M/F decide it's time to spawn again. As the female is still keeping watch over the fry right now. perhaps once the fry get to be minimum 1cm? (they are around 3mm now)

On a side note the fry are a bit odd looking... very transparent, you can easily see their finnage, but over the transparent parts of their body it almost looks as if there are clear bubbles on/in them. I figured this is just their coloring, it doesn't look like a parasite.

I try to get around to snapping a picture and posting later tonight.

thanks for the feedback thus far!

imo, you want the parents to do as much work for you as they will do. when they want to spawn again, you will see agression against the babies. that is the time.
