It seems like the female is protecting eggs, based on her behavior. A pH of 8 is certainly high, but I don't think I'd do anything now that it seems the fish have spawned. Radical changes in pH could be harmful to both the fish and the eggs. It is strange to have such a high pH with low hardness. This rarely occurs in nature. Do you know your carbonate hardness (dKH)?
