Regular (25% -ish) water changes with slightly cooler water &
feeding some live or frozen food should help get them on their way.

Thanks muchly, folks. I fed them blackworms today. The female is really aggressive now and keeping the male in one corner of the tank. he barely got to eat any blackworms!

Just checked the pH and it's 8.0. What's the best way of lowering it? The general Hardness is very very low, so I think I'm OK with that. Also, how often to do water changes?

It seems like the female is protecting eggs, based on her behavior. A pH of 8 is certainly high, but I don't think I'd do anything now that it seems the fish have spawned. Radical changes in pH could be harmful to both the fish and the eggs. It is strange to have such a high pH with low hardness. This rarely occurs in nature. Do you know your carbonate hardness (dKH)?

Thanks, Mike. You're deadly right. I rechecked the hardness and got results I can't understand: the carbonate hardness is 4 degrees but the general hardenss is more than 30 degres. It's probably the test solutions - they are very old.

I will begin using distilled water for the water changes and use some oak leaves for the pH.

Not sure about the eggs theory - she's not hanging out in either cave much...
