Well it's definitely a cichlid and the spot on the dorsal fin is a characteristic of many African cichlids.
It's very like the young Sarotherodon pictured on p49 of Lamboj's book.

Hello Steve,
Well, yes it certainly is an African cichlid and a tilapine at that. The photo could depict Sarotherodon galilaeus galilaeus, but I'm not aware of this species being in the U.S.

Thanks for the info. You figure this fish will get to 15-20 cm?
I already have a tank of O. niloticus, I don't think I need another group of potentially large growing monsters.

I think this is the fish in question. Now that I have seen the fish in person, I'm leaning towards Sarotherodon gallileus, too.
