Using Litter as decoration

I usually read about the use of some oak leaves for decoration, especially for south american biotypes.

I was wondering if someone had ever tried ¨common¨ grass (terrestrial grass) as decoration litter. I want to know if it can change drastically the water parameters, or can affect the health of the fishes (altough if its boiled first).

Thanks for the comments

I've used beech leaves before with good results. It took months for the leaves to break down. I'm not an expert but I think that grass, lacking the compounds (tanins) that are in leaves, would rot rather quickly and fail to provide the conditions we seek by using leaves.
That's just my hunch though.
