I am currently in the process of setting up a planted 29 gallon apisto tank. The tank is cycled and planted, and currently has a group of black phantom tetras, and panda cories.

The pH of the water is 6.5, and the KH is 4. (If the KH is too high, I would be willing to consider adding peat to the filter to soften the water)

I am looking for some suggestions regarding a good apisto for this type of water. I know that cacatuides and borelli would probably do fine in these conditions, but am looking for some other suggestions so that I can make an educated decision when I go to the lfs to pick out my new fish.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and advice any of you can offer me. :D

cubsfan,

Your parms are fine for alot of apistos, but I would suggest seeing what the LFS in your area have, determining what you like and then consider asking for advise about the possible further manipulation to your water. You probably won't need any. The selection of Apistogramma species at most LFS's that I have have visited is very limited, if they have any at all. Regardless, don't go by what we suggest to start. You may not end up getting something that you truely want.

I erred on the side of caution this weekend, and picked up 3 cacatuiodies (sp?). They seem to be doing fine at the moment. I am very pleased with their appearance and behavior thus far.

One question I have is at what size do female apistos generally reach sexual maturity. The male is noticeably larger than one of the females, but shows an interest in her. Just curious as to when I should expect breeding between these two to start. She is maybe 3/4 to 1" long. Thanks for the help! :)
