What is everyone's experience with spawning Nijsseni's ? What were the water parameters at the time of spawning? There seems to be alot of conflicting info out there on the precise ph of spawning them.

Ideal conditions should be pH ~5.5, & very soft water. Domestic fish will often reproduce in moderately hard water (dGH ~ 5º) with almost no carbonate hardness.

A. nijsseni are one of the apisto species that tends to form pairs. Often as not with only 2 fish, the "pair" are incompatible or take a very long time to accept each other.

I realize that, but they're a pair that came from David soares. I bought them as a pair, so they better have accepted each other.

There are different kinds of "pairs". Most pairs offered are 1 male & 1 female. A "mated pair" is a male & a female that have successfully spawned together. Sometimes "mated pairs" will not rebond if they have had their environment changed considerably.

David is quite honest & reputable in his dealings. I have never known him to sell "mated pairs". Did he claim to sell you a "mated pair" or just a "pair"?

hmm... I don't remember if he said mated or just pair. Since I don't remember it saying "Mated Pair" I would assume they were just sold as a pair.
So you're saying that I may never see any action from them?

As long as the 2 live together, there is always hope. Personally, if you have the tank space & $$ I would suggest that you buy some more nijsseni & then let them pair naturally.

space is not the problem, it's finding more nijsseni that's the problem...
I had to pay more than enough just for the two, I'd break the bank if I had to get anymore off Dave.
I figure I'll give these guys 3-4 months then start looking for more if nothing happens.
Anything else you can think of that might trigger them to spawn?

I've just noticed she's doing alot of excavating, she has fair sized cave she's dug out under a chunk of driftwood and is now becomming aggressive towards the pencil fish. Hopefully this is the beginning of something great =)

C-dude tell ya what--I sold them as a pair not a mated pair--it wouldnt work if I gave up my breeding stock--but! She's digging that's a good sign --if after a bit here they dont spawn for ya let me know and we'll get ya off on the right foot--for shipping Ill send you a little group of 4-5 and you put them in a 20 or so and let them pair off on their own.

I might just do that Dave, it looks like nothings doing. It seemed like they were getting down to business but no dice.
Guess I'll have to start from square one.
