A new dwarf cichlid genus has been erected for the species originally described as Nannacara hoehnei by Ribeiro in 1918. Kullander removed it from Nannacara in 1983 but didn't put it in any established genus. Since then it's been discussed as 'Aequidens' hoehnei. Now Ottoni and Mattos have erected the monotypic genus (only 1 species presently) Rondonacara for it. Genetic studies show that Rondonacara hoehnei is most closely related to Laetacara species. The author also state that it is a critically endangered species due to habitat loss/modification.
