I had a similar experience, and it transferred to some rams that were in the same aq. I suggest quarintining the fish. I can't id what the real problem is, but I think like you that it is fungus.

I hate to tell you, but I lost mine. I tried a number of meds.

If you do a search on this site, there is some info on using salt and increasing the heat. I have not had any luck with this either.

If you find out anything, please post it as no doubt this has been a problem for others.

Good luck,
Randy

if it looks like cotton wool then it probably is.

the use of melafix will most certainly help. personally would avoid salt myself. melafix has cured much worse cases of fungus IME.

I keep mbuna, and they can be pretty rough with each other. I had 2 females in quarantine, and they slipped past the divider, and basically tore each other new ones.... the 1 female ended up with massive scratches along the 1 flank, and fungus grabbed hold, and created a blanket on there. I added melafix, and in a week it was all healed up

Another potential med is Jungle brand parasite cure, which was recommended as a possible cure from Cathy G on this forum.

Sorry I am not much help. I agree the melafix may be of help.

Hi Maniac,

How is your fish doing? Any progress?

I had some A. cacatuoides "Triple Red" that I got in March '08. My male had a similar blemish. I had thought it may be viral Lymphocystis; unfortuantely though, I could be entirely wrong! However, you could search and read about this disease as it is another possibility to look into.

Good luck w/ your fish. I hope they make a recovery for you. Sometimes I find this hobby seems to have more than its share of frustration! I must really be an addict to keep at it in spite of the heartache.

I started a seperate thread relating my problems, although, I'm not sure it can offer any help or hope; as its still on going. I'm wondering if there could potentially be a larger problem developing w/ this species??

Sorry I haven't been on in a while. I used Melafix which seemed to be helping and the cotton growth was almost gone but then suddenly the fish lost its appetite. It died a few weeks ago about 3 weeks after the original post.

Thanks for your help. Currently, I don't have any apisto's left but will be retrying after I move to my new place in September.
