Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and about to take on the world of Apistos. I've kept and bred fish for about 15 years now or so. Well, except for the last few years anyway. I kind of got away from the hobby when the kids came along but I'm on my way back. I had my first Apistogrammas about 10 years ago. I fell in love with the shape and coloring and jumped in without doing my research. I ended up with my male killing the female because I didn't give her the chance to find adequate refuge.
But anyway, this time I am doing my research. I've read enough lately to make me dizzy....there is so much out ther now. I'm in my planning stages right now. I've been away from home for a while and will be starting up in a couple months after I get back. So many decisions......
Right now I am trying to figure out my water situation. As I have been away, I can't measure my water. But last I remember it was pretty hard and alkaline. So, I know I need to do some work. I've been reading so much about reverse osmosis trying to figure out if it's essential, or for me. I'm thinking before go with RO I'll try filtering my water through peat and see if that gives me the desired results. If not I'll go with the RO.
I'm gonna use a lot of drift wood, java moss, and java fern. I'll experiment with different caves and see which works best. I know this is long winded. I'm just excited about getting back into my fish and sick of reading, so now I'll talk about it.
I'm like a kid in a candy store right now... I want them all, but will have to settle with just a couple and move on from there. So, I'll be in looking for all the info I can find. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I'll keep you all up to date with my plans and how they work out.
