Hi. I'm new to this site. I have a 20 gal. long housing 3 tetras (phantom tetra), 2 bumble bee gobies, and a barb. I'm going to get apisto cacatuiodes "double red" soon and I need some info on them. Also can anyone post pics? Thanks!

Also I have some questions:

Are cac's hardy fish?

Will they get along with my fish?

Is there a difference in orange flash and double red cacatuiodes besides color?

Hi Tara,

Cacs are fairly hardy, especially with regular water changes. They'll do fine with you tetras and probably also you barbs as long as they aren't too big. However, I haven't had any myself for many years, if I remember right, tiger barbs are notorious fin nippers. This may not even be a problem unless your cacs are of timid nature.

The difference between OF cacs and TR cacs besides color, is the OF cacs usually have solid orange fins, while the TR cacs have small spots of black and white on their red fins.

I forgot to mention that if you plan to raise any fry, the tetras and barbs are pretty much out or you'll get few if any fry.

cootwarm, if my cacs have fry, can I seporate the tank resembling what side of the tank the eggs are on so the tetras and barbs don't eat the fry? Will that work!

Hi Tara,

I've heard of that being done, though I've never done it myself. It should work. It doesn't sound very attractive though. I'd set up a 10 gallon for the extra barbs and tetras, keeping only 1 or 2 in with the cacs. You still may lose some fry, but the parents should be able to protect quite a few. In a 20 long the cac parents will probably keep the other fish confined to one end. Just 1 or 2 isn't much trouble to keep track of, but too many barbs and tetras would overwhelm the parents and you'll get zero fry.

But if a divider is your only alternative, it should work fine. I just prefer a more natural look in my tanks.
