In Mergus cichlid atlas Vol1 1st edition page 908 there is an A sp "red cheek". Is this what gets traded as A "barbarossa"? If not, what are we dealing with? I can't seem to find any information googling red cheek that relates to the fish pictured in the atlas.

I do not have the Atlas, but could it be A. sp. "Rotwangen" ? I am guessing the name "Red Cheek" is translated directly from the German word "Rotwangen".

The fish you are talking about (A. "Barbarossa") seems to be Apistogramma eremnopyge.

TC is correct. The fish on page 908 is A. sp. Rotwangen/Red-cheeks. In the German edition of CA1 it is labeled as A. spec. Rotwangen. It is a beautiful caetei-complex species from the Ilha de Marajó, a large island at the mouth of the Amazon. I wish it was still available in the hobby, but as far as I can recall it hasn't been imported in more than 20 years. The fish originally sold in Germany as A. sp. Rotbart (German) / Barbarossa (Spanash) / Red-beard (English) was named A. eremnopyge by Kullander 2004.
