I bought these fish as Nannacara anomala. I posted these photos on another forum, and one member said he believes they are N. aureocephalus instead.

The two photos were taken at the LFS.

Hi Pete

I bought a pair of fish from this tank...

I've had anomala several times before....these are the same as I've had previously

In my opinion they are definately "Golden head Nanacara"

Nanacara anomala....

that young male is showing a strong vertical barring.....it is a much stronger pattern in females if spawning or brood caring

I had to chuckle. Do you know what "Nannacara aureocephalus" translate to? "Golden Head Dwarf Acara"! Seriously, however, 'N. anomala' is highly polychromatic. I've seen males that were almost totally black to totally gold and everything in between. Overall color is meaningless. The two species can be recognized by the pigmentation on the scales of the flanks. On 'N. anomala' the scales are darker in the centers and lighter at the edges (usually a golden color). On N. aureocephalus the scales are lighter in the centers and darker at the edges.
