My female gibbiceps isnt yellow, even though she is guarding eggs..

What are some factors that can cause a female apisto not to turn yellow?

This is the first time I have had a female not be yellow

This is totally amazing! Have you seen the female release or pick up eggs or larvae?

Yes, it's amazing. :)
The female has been guarding eggs/larvae for some days. In the day time, every time looks normal and the female gib is guarding inside the cave.
The male fish is patroling around outside the cave. While at night, the female starts to mouthbrood and stays outside the cave with a mouthful of eggs/larvae!!

Hi Blue,

As Mike says, amazing!!!

What's the history behind this pair???

Andrew

Hi Andrew. This pair of gib come from Germany, tank-bred. I have posted their photos before and the male fish has a super red head... they also bred before and the offsprings are now 1 inch long... this is their third spawn while it's the first time i observed this mouthbrooding behaviour.. i was also very surprised and hence i took the photos for them... here come two more:

Hi Rolo: Long time no see :)

Hmm, it is the first time i found this behavior of this pair.
It seemed to me that this female gib likes to mouthbrood the larvae during evening time...

An update: The fry already swim out today and i will post some more
photos after work today. ^.^

Wow!!!

This is really interesting...

is she doing this regularely or just once?

best regards,
Rolo

Hello Blueblue,

Hi Rolo: Long time no see :)
Yes, Sorry. Much work, less time. ...you know why! But it's getting better ...slowly. ;-)

Do you have enemy-fishes in the tank or just this pair? Any idea, what reasons could make her showing this behaviour?

regards,
Rolo

1. i see :)
2. Hmm.. there are only 1 male gib, 1 female gib, and a small catfish as a cleaner. I find that the male gib was a bit aggressive towards the female... maybe the female felt that there's danger to the fry and hence she kept them inside her mouth...

By the way, maybe there're also other similar interesting cases here.
I would be glad to see some more sharing...

I'm interested in fact what "type" pf breeding choose females when keeping them in group e.g. 6-10 specimens? Maybe they will keep fry in their mouths, because of much more danger from other Gibbi's?
What do you think?

hmm, you have got an interesting thought... in addition, kidnapping will take place in which the female will try to show special display and coloration to attract more babies to swim towards her... in one of my experiments, i have got a female guttata taking care of her babies and some babies of atahualpa (sp. Sunset) :)
