'matadi' AND 'nyete'...

2003 is starting off well! A spawn of about 25 Pel. sub. 'matadi' became free swimming today, AND my little Pel. tean. 'nyete' suprised the heck out of me by leading a group of six fry around the tank. This is the first spawn for the 'nyete' pair. I will let the pair raise these the best they can and hopefully cement the pair.

The 'lobes' are fat and happy, but no spawning yet....

Tis the season, evidently. My matadi are sitting on eggs now and the moanda are doing the happy dance. I need to show them the pictures in the L&S book. They don't look near as sharp, but they are still rather young.

Does appear that things are going well. My N. dimidiatus spawned. I also have pair of african leaf fish with eggs, and just got another spawn of ancistrus as well!

Well.. I managed to get the group of matadi fry into an incubator today. They readily fed upon bbs. I hope that I am on my way to completing my short term New Year's resolution.

The nyete fry are still there. Mom seems very attentive. Dad is a bit more absentee. He does chase the dither fish (platies... I love platies... colorful, happy, swim near the top platies) off the bottom for her. They are also eating bbs, but they are noticable smaller than the matadi fry; though I think that they are a bit younger.

Ted,

What are the parameters on the Nyete? I've got a wild pair that aren't doing too much for me right now. They have went through the motions a couple times but have yet to close the deal, so to speak.

The pH in that tank is 6.6. The EC is about 500 mS/cm. Every water change it gets lower, because I am refilling with RO/DI. My tap is 1700 mS/cm. There are a lot of tannins in the water too. I think that the high EC is affecting hatch rate. The pair only has six fry.. but they are doing pretty well.

This pair of nyete are impressive. I have never had a pair of young Pelvicachromis keep a spawn as long as this pair has. They are relentless. All six fry are still doing well.

Sad news.... the nyete fry are gone. I had to move the tank in order to have new carpeting installed. The disruption was too much for the parents to bear, and they broke from their brood protection. Hopefully their experience as parents will pay of with another spawn soon.
