I'm trying to get up and running again after several years... I'm cycling now and trying to keep up with what is going on chemically. I have soft water, my PH is crashing (down to low range of my current test kit...6.0) I can't fine a liquid test kit that will measure below 6.0. Any recommendations???

Hi all,
Ronv an electronic pH meter is good investment, we had a recent thread, so have a search and some suggestions and prices should come up.

Tetra makes a liquid PH test kit that measures from 5.0 - 10.00. While the increments are rather broad (0.5), I find that I can read them much easier than the liquid test made by API. The Tetra PH tester is included in their Laborett test kit which is easily found in most fish shops.

Another testing device you might want to consider is the ColorPHast test strips which are made in Germany. Unlike the other strips on the market, these do not bleed. I've been using the PH 5.0 - 10.00 intermediate range kit which, for me, is easier to read than the narrow range kits they offer. Some of their kits go down to 0 PH. I obtained my strips from the folowing mail order company. Shipping is free:

I agree with Mike that an electronic pH meter is cheaper in the long run. However, if you prefer pH strips, I'd look into laboratory supply stores such as Fisher Scientific (www.fisherscientific.com). Most accept orders from privat persons (except for certain chemicals), have a great selection, and are cheaper than aquarium stores.
