While skimming through various threads, I've heard some references to using leaf litter in the substrate. I realise that the difference in water quality between different countries and areas probably makes it o.k to use in some instances, but don't you have problems with hydrogen sulphide? I would have thought that leaf litter would be quite dangerous to put in a tank. Your thoughts?

hydrogen sulfide is related to anaerobic activity. a tank should have water flow throughout, or an o2 source in all areas, including under the gravel. even the tiniest amount is enough. i don't even put 2 rocks together, as this can cause these anaerobic areas that can poison the tank when they are moved.

You do not need a lot of leaves. If you use larger leaves then you will not have any danger of several leaves compacting together.
