hey everyon I seem to have a cockaoo that doesn't know what sex it preffers. It has some male markings and no black lines on it lower fins but it hasn't gotten it high dorsal fin and is very light on the coloring. also its stopped growing and never flares at males or females.

the fish in question is to the bottom right.

I agree, it probably is a female. The highly bred (& inbred) color forms of this species has produced many masculine features on females of this species. I sometimes wonder if the problems some people have with this strain has something to do with 'masculinization' of the females.

I disagree. I believe this is a typical male with repressed development because of the presence of other males. I suspect that given a tank to itself it would soon develop into an undisputable male.

It looks more like a young/small male to me.

Does it ever turn yellowish and do the ventral fins show more black than the obvious males?

thats just it. it has never tried to breed(turn yellow) and there is no black on its lower fins. I got this fish with all my others and it has stayed the same size as my females. I moved it so we will se what happens.

Re-designing and starting a new fish room all over again. This time we'll have many more Apistsogramma species. We are expanding.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
