Is this a female D39

I purchased 6 unsexed fishes as D39 mentioned in this thread:

Over time they were killed one by one with 1 solid male and 2 solid females (i actually only found one corpse and it was the last male but at least one of the female had damage in the side before it vanished and the dead male had trauma). This is the only remaining fish and i think it is a female 'cept for the pattern in the tail. I have 4 more arriving but thinking i will put them else where because someone in this group was hyper aggressive. Normally the hiding places is under the driftwood which has a lot of gaps in the back - anyway i'm not even sure this is a female or why the aggression level was so high - i never saw any actual violence among the fishes when i was in the room and the one remaining is not a shy fish by any means. the only other occupants are 7 morse code tetra.

Any comment on if i should put the 4 new ones in this 29 or a different 29 - the other 29 has 4 1/4 inch nijjensi fry and some kerri tetra - i'm not overly concern about the nijjensi fry though long term they would get removed but that is at least 2 or 3 months in the future. I do not expect more d39 to be available anytime in the next year.

This fish now has substantial size and is probably 1.5 inches - the 4 new ones come from the same batch but one is likely a runt as significantly smaller according to the store.

Male for me.
I don't disagree on it looking maleish but at the 1/2 the size the other male has colouring and similar that identified it as a d39 while this one looks rather as we shall say plain. If it is indeed a male then is it some other species mixed with the group ?

This guy is just trying to not get beat up by the dominant male.

He is the only one in the aquarium.
Mine were super shy and took forever to show color. You either have a dud male or one that is still learning that it isn't in trouble if it shows color. I don't see anything feminine about the two photos.

You are correct it is a male d39. I put the new d39 in a 20 long with some green neon tetra (just short term solution till they get larger); and i put a pair of a. elizabeth with the solo d39 pictured. It has now fully coloured up showing the d39 vertical stripes. It seemed to be flirting with the elizabeth female - anyway this not meant to be perm. configuration but i was worried it would kill the new d39 since it appeared to be the solo survior of the last group - not sure what to do with it long term but i probably can't keep it with the elizabeth. Anyway i'll leave it there for a little while and cross my fingers until i have a better solution.

I am more interested in the d39 which I think are nice but i don't understand why it was so violent or what happened to the other group given others comment on them being more passive.

The problem with the new group in the 20 long is that aquarium is almost unviewable due to dense plants and it has a lot of green neon tetra (did you know that green neon tetra can successfully hide for 9 months without being seen?)

I'm a little shocked but the d39 spends all day 'flirting' with the female elizabeth - anyway if i can catch him tomorrow i'll put him in a 5 by himself for the next month or two until the other group of d39 get larger - they were the same catch but 1/2 the size.

Not sure why i'm commenting - i just dont' feel at ease leaving the d39 with the lizzie.

Well he was foolish so now he is in a little breeder box till the 5 is ready; it was a continous water exchange with the tank for health benefits.
