Hey guys. I picked this guy/gal up a week ago at my LFS. This fish was the last one out of about a dozen that they had received a week prior. Or so they said. I have been rather busy lately so my weekly visits to their store have not been happening.

Anyway, Ive been using Dr. Axelrod's mini atlas of freshwater fish to attempt to get a definite ID. There are a couple that could be my fish. I asked over at aquaticplantcentral.com and was advised to ask here as well. (Thank you ED S)

This is a really awesome fish. A great eater, totally confident and very inquisitive. He/she is a total maniac though when it comes to feeding time. Even my school of tetras submit to this one.

Let me know what you guys think. A definite ID would be great but I think I would be just as happy knowing the gender.

I'm still learning to use this camera. These pics are an improvement from how they were turning out. :)

Thanks for looking.

K20A2,

I moved your post to the I.D. section just to make it easier to find later.

The fish in question is a male and it looks to be an eunotus type. Unless you have very current literature it can be very difficult to find many of the Apistos that are now avalibale in a book. But that doesn't mean the old books aren't worth while, just incomplete and occasionally showing a miss I.D.'d picture.

I thank you.

For me it´s Apistogramma cf. eunotus "orange-tail" (A 74), an underdemanding Apistogramma and very easy to breed

This is actually one of two that I thought it may be. Judging by whats listed in my atlas of course.

Thanks for looking.

Jose is correct, A. cf. eunotus (Orangeschwanz/Orange-tail). Your mini atlas certainly isn't the most accurate source, but it seems to have worked this time.

Perhaps my next question will require to much of an explanation, perhaps not. I'm going to ask anyway..

What are the visible markings and or body shape that defines this fish as a male? Also, how would a female look compared to him? I would love to find him a woman or two one day and begin to learn the art of breeding these fish. Are they harem spawner's? If I find more, should I pick him up a couple girls?

Thanks for the help.

Males will be larger, have higher/longer dorsal, anal and ventral fins ending in pointed tips. The ventral fins of males have little black on the front edge; females have much more black. Males often show the blue gill cover, but female do not. See: http://forum.apistogramma.com/showthread.php?t=5050&highlight=eunotus. The top photo shows a female in courting colors. Compare it with the male in the bottom photo.

I see they have wild caught eunotus, thanks for looking out. I also see that they are located in York PA, perhaps a drive up there would be in order.

I think you may have just helped my guy get some girls..

They have A. cacatuoides as well. I'm setting a 75G up soon and wanted to keep cacatuoides in there, so I think these guys are going to be the source of my fish.

Are they a reputable business? Are the fish quality?
