One female has taken up residence in a pvc cave. She won't even let the male come near without rushing out and shaking her tail at him. If the other female comes near she takes a beating. Of course it would be the one cave that I can't get a good look in! She came out to eat this morning but has been in hiding ever since. This is the bigger female. She isn't as yellow as the other one but she has more of a dark stripe. So anything special I need to do? I really hope this goes well. I'd love to apisto babies soon! Oh and if they do survive when can I expect to see them? Thanks!!

Congratulations ginnie5!

If you know the day that the eggs were layed, you should start looking for free-swimmers about 7-8 days after that. Have some appropriate food ready by day 7. It is best to get food to them soon after. Fry do best when they are fed well in the first week or 2 after.

well we did have eggs

till somebody ate them. :( Yesterday morning I noticed that she was out and about an awful lot so I turned off the tank lights and got the flashlight out. All of them were gone. Oh well at least I know they know what to do and hopefully there will be more eggs.

That's a shame, ginnie5. But, don't give up the ship that quickly. Sometimes apistos can suprise you. Just because the eggs are not in that same place and she is swimming around, doesn't mean that they are gone. She might have moved them and/or she might not be constantantly watching them. Keep your eyes out for a pattern of her movement to see if there is still a location that she returns to time and again.

Relocation of the eggs

Hi there ginnie,

I also have some Apistogrammas, and until a day ago I thought the first eggs of theirs were eaten,... but yesterday I noticed that they were moved by their parents to a nearby location..... What a joy :D .....
See if your eggs haven´t been moved to another location......

A kiss

Sorry for my english.... I´m portuguese :)
:) Bye
