I have a large near adult lamprologus tetracephalus (see pic). I would love to start trying to breed them, but I have no idea how to sex them. Mine has so far killed two of his own species that I tried to introduce to his tank, my assumption being that they were the same sex as him. Although I refer to "him" I have no idea of "his" sex.. Any help?

There is little to no sexual dimorphism (external sexual differences) in Neolamprologus tretocephalus. I would think your guess as to the dominant/aggressive fish being a male is correct. At best the males will grow slightly larger then the females and the males will also have more pointed fisn tips (dorsal and anal). One guy in my local fish club was able to successfully spawn the fish after a great deal of time and effort. He started with a young group, I don’t know how many, and let them grow up and mature together. He experienced a lot of losses as a pair formed and cleaned house. In the end the pair required nothing smaller then a 75 gallon tank (48â€Âx18â€Âx21â€Â). Also have plenty of rocks and other hard structure in the tank to create as many territories and hiding places as possible. I’ve had greater success in breeding aggressive territorial fish when I make several separate “piles†of rock verses one big mass. The separate stacks help the fish to have easily distinguished territorial boundary markers and limit the squabbles over turf. Unlike most Rift Lake African Cichlid advice feed the fish a diet heavy in meat/protein based foods, as the fish is an invert and snail eater in the lake.
