Once your fish are 4.5 cm long, the males will develop a much higher dorsal fin and more blue color. The females remain a pale cream color with much shorter fins. If your fish are this size & you cannot see differences, then it is possible that you have a different fish. A fish called A. sp. Steel-blue, Blaukopf, and Blue-head is often sold as A. borellii or Opal. This is probably a hybrid species. Females almost never are sold.

Hello,

If you would like your fish to spawn, you'd have to do more than get your female ripe to spawn. You'd have to do what I like to call, "create the conditions that make it optimum for spawning". There's ways to do this but I'll just answer your question of how to get your female fat. There's no trick to getting the female to get full with eggs. All you need is a good diet of protein-rich foods, I prefer live foods, like mosquito larvae (not often though), bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. She needs a lot of nutrients and extra protein to produce her eggs. Also, feeding your male this diet can only help him also! Best wishes and good luck. john
