also would i be able to keep them with syno pectricola(sp) these are some of my favorite cat fish and my favorite syno but i dont want them to eat other fish in my tank.
How large of a tank(s) are you considering using? Adult shell dwellers can reach 2†in males and 1 ½†in females on average. They should be fine with true S. petricola, which only reach about 4†them selves. The fry of the cichlids would not fair to well though! The Synodontis would make quick work of any small fish.
Several other Tanganyikan Dwarf Cichlids to consider would be the Neolamprologus brichardi complex (a lyretail cave spawner) which contains numerous species and multiple color/location forms. One of my favorites in the group is the daffodil brichardi, N. pulcher. In addition to getting the outstanding lyretail the group is known for this type has impressive yellow unpaired fins. Any fish from this group would need at least a 20gallon tank for mature adults which can reach a 4â€Â-5†size. These fish in general would be great with the S. petricola, as would be the Julidochromis sp. recommended by awholley. The N. brichardi types would most likely be able to raise several fry up even with the cats, provided you have enough rockwork in the tank.
the tank is a 44 gallon corner(not the best tank but it was 100% free with stand and hood) sand as the substrate. its a daimond shape longest sides are 24 inches 24 inches tall and in the front it has the sides the larger two i believe a 8 inches and the smaller middle one is 6 inches.
thanks for the fish names i will look up info and see which ones i like and what else i need for the tank before i get the fish as far as if they prefer rocks or shells or what have you.
