Hi everyone.
Just found this forum, after long time searching for an active dwarf forum.

I have had aquariums for a couple of years, but I Just mowed and had shut down the ones I had running.

My plan is to start a small (16 gallon/ 63 liters). With only a pair of apistos and maybe an ancistrus lorichadae.

I am writing because in would like input on which apistos to buy.
I an fairly experienced, have kept cacatoides and rams.

The Situation in Denmark.
There is a (in my opinion) fine selection of apistos, ranging i prince from approx. 10 - 50 usd a pair. (50 til 300 kroner)
There are apistogramma -
Borelli
Cacatoides
Agasizzi
Gibbiceps
Hoignei
Macmasteri
Nijsseni
Retuculsa
steindachneri
trifasciata
biateniata
cruzi
gephyra
hongsloi
juriensis
linkei
pandurini
viejita
and
Taenicara candidi
Microgeophagus ramirezi

At the moment in am leaning towards Nijsseni, but I honestly do not know anything about most of them and would like to know if I am overlooking the an obvious choise.

Hej

Can you find Ap. Linkei in Denmark? I have looked around for those fellas a couple of years now, but no luck. Haven´t seen them here in Sweden since the late eighties.

Best regards/ Per

Hi welcome to the forum :D
The choice of apisto would depend on your tank parameters and the setup. Some species would prefer lower ph and softer water while others may not. Hiding places are generally recommended and more would be needed if the particular species is more aggressive.
Do you intend to breed them would be another question.
Personally i think Ap. Bitaeniata would be a good choice cos they got nice finnage, coloration..are smaller and would be suitable for your smallish tank. In addition, they are not relly that demanding and quite easy to breed. Just my humble opinion. Cheers

Additional parameters

The water in Denmark where I live i pretty hard around GH 15, and the water pH is around 8-8.5

Breeding is absolutely a goal but not a must for start.
(Thinking back on my little lemon yellow cacatoides mom watching her fry, something I want to see again.)

Apistogramma biateniata are the most expensive fish in the lot 50 usd.

Are Pandurini as aggresive as Nijsseni??

Hi, you need to do something whit the water before you could get some apistos. Some sp would probebly live, but I would not recomend it. At least get it down to 5gh and Ph 7. You probebly ned a RO unit. And yes pandurini and nijisenni are some of the more aggressiv sp. I would say that pandurini are much easier to maintain since they do well in more netural water then nijisenni.

I have breed cacatoides in harder water 20 gH.
But I know that they have been hardened for generations, but I will look into the options I have on changing water values.
My first thought is to collect rainwater since reverse osmosis will be costly.

Where in Denmark do you find the best LFS with Apistogrammas?
Im going to Copenhagen this weekend and know that one good fishshop moved to Jylland, Akvarei West.
