F1 or F2?

My kribensis have been hiding in a cave since I got them... today I decided to investigate the cave to see if they were still alive. LOL I discovered some wigglers on the bottom and upon further investigation a ton of eggs in the top right of the cave. Evidently their just hatching. I am really hoping that they fry make it. With the last female my male was spawned with the fry were eaten at wiggler stage, I dunno which parent or if both did it as they were at a friends house at the time. The new female has had several successful spawns with a different male.

If it happens this time what should I do next time they spawn to prevent it?

Also my male is a WC and my female is an F1... what would that make the babies???

Thanks,
Genn

The term F1 (1'st filial generation) really doesn't make much sense without knowledge of the starting point. It is originally borrowed from genetics where it makes useful codes in crossing experiments. In our hobby I have never seen the F terms used for anything other than describing the number of generations passed from the wild caught parents (F1, F2 and so forth), although I suspect guppy breeders might use it in its more original sense.

In your example we can't really give any meaningful F code to describe the distance to the wild caught. Unless we begin to use F1.5 or something like that. So there really is no simple answer to your question other than your krib's offspring will be F1 from the parents that got them.

Good luck with the wigglers:) ,
Lars

In the hobby, the F# is used to describe the number of generations from wild based upon the LEAST WILD parent. I would call your fish F2, because the female parent is an F1. A more descriptive and meaningful way to describe them would be to say that you have an F1 female outcrossed to a wild male. From the pure genetics point of view your parents are unrelated and the offspring would be F1, but the term is not used that way in the hobby.

Regardless, there is really little danger of inbreeding problems in the early generations from wild. In fact, I know of aquarists who have been line breeding fish for many years and dozens of generations without any problems. That is only possible by culling intelligently. Cull for deformities, but not for less than desireable colors. Populations of fish have high genetic diversity, but by picking the one or two best to keep, rather than the one or two worst to cull, the natural diversity is lost and there is a greater chance of isolating a bad gene in a line.

Thanks for the information. Its very helpful.

The parents have moved the fry out of the cave today. Their yolk sacs arnt quite absorbed yet, but they are getting around a bit. Their soo cute! I am guessing that there are around 100 of them cause it looks like ALOT of fry. Hopefully they will be ready to eat tomorrow. I am really excited about these guys. My friend had several spawns with the male and a different female and non of the fry made it past the first day of being wigglers. Supposedly eaten by the parents, but their doing great for me so far.

Congrats on the free swimmers :) All my fish except my BN are egg eaters so I never get to see Mom leading a small (or large) group of fry around to find food. Hope the tank mates don't get the fry!

They spawned before I could add anything to the tank so its just he 2 of them in there with the fry. Their doing really well and the fry are growing good. My intention with using dithers is it coax them to come out in the open a bit more as I never see them, but now they're always out with the fry. I'll probalby add some dithers when the fry are older or after I remove them from the tank.
